The bride broke her engagement after her fiancé made sexist demand behind her back. The dad of the bride revealed that the fiancé and his parents made some demand behind the back of the bride. Upon hearing about it, she made the decision to break off the wedding with her partner of seven years.
All had seemed to have gone well until he met the man’s family on some occasions when some of their comments to his daughter made him feel uncomfortable. Some of the comments included “I don’t know why you’re working, isn’t that the husband’s job? It’s the mother’s job to be taking care of the children”.
The dad of the bride said that his daughter had recently been engaged. He even had thought of the fiancé to be kind, humble and respectful to their family.
As the planning for the wedding went ahead the fiancé arranged a meeting his family and the dad. He also added that the daughter couldn’t be involved in the following meeting. The dad said that he went and met the parents and the fiancé. The man’s parents asked him about arranging a dowry for his daughter to be a stay-at-home wife. A dowry is a transfer of payment, gifts or property by a bride to groom on the account of their marriage. Historically speaking to transfer financial responsibility of the bride to groom’s family.
After hearing his parents, the father was shocked of them demanding a dowry in 2020 and also knew his daughter’s passion to pursue her dreams. According to the sources and what the dad said, the family told him to think it over and not say anything about it to the daughter. He ignored what they had to say and told her everything.
He added, “She started crying saying she didn’t know that her boyfriend was so sexist. She asked me what she could do now, and I told her that she wasn’t being forced and could cancel her marriage if she didn’t want it. Well, that is exactly what happened and now her boyfriend and his parents are calling me saying I took away the love of his life.” He also said that her friends and bridesmaids are blaming the dad for breaking up the marriage but for him it’s his daughter’s happiness that matters the most.
He put everything on social media asking if he had been wrong to advice his daughter too break the wedding off. Many supported him saying things like he saved his daughter from a bad future and sorry that she had to go through that. Another said it was a shock to realize how sexist and misogynistic. Someone also reassured him saying “You did not tell your daughter to cancel the wedding. You told her that if she did cancel the wedding, you would not think less of her. That is a really important distinction.”
As a community and society, we also agree with the people supporting the dad. They should be heading in the future not staying years behind everything else. We wish the daughter the best of luck for the future with also assuring the dad that he’s right thinking so much for his daughter.
